It would appear that you pay a premium for the forested and lake strewn locations and the vast array of in-house hot baths and children's water park amusements. From our experience Japan has this class of 'resort' hotels located in the countryside that are expensive for what you get and a bit old and scruffy around the edges. I later found we had been given a 'Standard Room with Tatami Area and Lake View - Non-Smoking' for A$354 per night. We refused to accept the room point blank and were on the verge of walking out and losing a night's room charge when the manager miraculously found a room that had a window that opened and didn't reek of smoke, and very graciously gave it to us at the same rate despite it obviously being a more expensive room than the one we'd booked, a 'Twin Room with Lake View' for A$208 per night. I later checked this claim and was astonished to find they do in fact have non-smoking rooms so go figure. He also said the hotel did not have any non-smoking rooms, not because they were all taken, simply that didn't have any at all. To make matters worse the aluminium window sash had been pop riveted to the window frame with a piece of aluminium angle to stop it from being opened. Our allocated room stank of smoke and was unbearably hot due to the centrally controlled air conditioning that according to Yoshi the manager was run cool in summer and hot in winter and that was that. On the plus side the lobby was large and impressive with great views of the lake.
